Nokia unleashes the N9:No Buttons

Nokia has unveiled its next big device, the “first ever pure touch smartphone”, the N9 at the Nokia Connection event in Singapore. By “pure touch smartphone,” what the Espoo phone manufacturer means is that this is the first smartphone in the world that has no front-facing buttons. Small wonder that Nokia is promoting it with the line: “all it takes is a swipe.” That is all it literally takes to operate this smartphone which is powered by MeeGo and has an interface that seems a bit reminiscent of Windows Phone (we are not complaining) with panels of apps floating on three home screens (or home views, as Nokia opts to call them): applications, social networking feeds, and open applications. And in best Nokia tradition of late, this one is a tech beast too. It has a 3.9 inch curved glass AMOLED display, an 8 MP camera with Carl Zeiss optics (yes, yes, it has auto focus), storage of 16GB and 64 GB, and all the connectivity options you can think of, not least NFC. And in what seems like a jibe at some worthies in the competition, Nokia says “body of the Nokia N9 is made from the best in polycarbonate material engineering today, enabling superior antenna performance over most other competitors’ smartphones.” Ah, subtlety.

The phone will be available in three variants – black, cyan and magenta. Nokia has not yet given details of its availability or pricing beyond saying that it will be in stores “later this year.” We cannot wait – those specs, blended with MeeGo, have the potential to make this the most potent device to come out of Nokia’s stable since the heady days of the N95 and the E90! Hit the jump to see the official intro video.
